Two tablet bottles side by side on a bathroom shelf, one older than the other

Switching

Rybelsus became Ozempic tablets. What changed?

The name and the numbers, not the molecule. Rybelsus was discontinued in the United States on May 4, 2026 and replaced by Ozempic tablets, the same oral semaglutide with the same morning rules, sold as 1.5, 4 and 9 mg where Rybelsus said 3, 7 and 14.

The short answer

The name and the numbers, not the molecule. Rybelsus was discontinued in the United States on May 4, 2026 and replaced by Ozempic tablets, the same oral semaglutide with the same morning rules, sold as 1.5, 4 and 9 mg where Rybelsus said 3, 7 and 14.

What changed

Rybelsus, the first semaglutide tablet, was approved for type 2 diabetes in 2019 in three strengths: 3, 7 and 14 mg. In February 2026 the FDA approved a newer formulation of the same tablet under the Ozempic name, and on May 4, 2026 Rybelsus was discontinued in the United States. Pharmacies now dispense Ozempic tablets.

The new tablet uses a reformulated absorption enhancer that delivers the same exposure with less semaglutide. That is why the numbers on the bottle went down while the treatment did not change.

The dose mapping

RybelsusOzempic tablets
3 mg1.5 mg
7 mg4 mg
14 mg9 mg

Each Ozempic tablets strength corresponds to the Rybelsus strength on the same row. The label is explicit that the two are not interchangeable milligram for milligram, and it gives the switching table for the escalation and maintenance strengths.

From the label

RYBELSUS and OZEMPIC tablets are not substitutable on a mg-to-mg basis. Do not switch between RYBELSUS and OZEMPIC tablets during the initiation phase (Days 1 to 30). After 30 days of RYBELSUS or OZEMPIC tablet treatment, patients may switch between RYBELSUS and OZEMPIC tablet products. When switching, initiate the other semaglutide tablet product the day after discontinuing the previous semaglutide tablet product.

Nothing else in the schedule moved: the label still starts at the lowest strength for 30 days before stepping up, and that first month is the one month in which the label says not to switch.

What the label says

The morning rules did not change. The Rybelsus label, which Ozempic tablets inherit, says to take the tablet on an empty stomach in the morning with no more than 4 ounces of plain water, then to wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other oral medications.

On a missed dose, the sentence is the same as for the Wegovy pill:

From the label

If a dose is missed, skip the missed dose and take the next dose the following day.

What people actually do

The question that comes up most is about the bottle still in the cupboard. People who filled a Rybelsus prescription in April and moved to Ozempic tablets in June want to know whether 7 mg of the old tablet and 4 mg of the new one are the same thing. They are, on the label's mapping. Whether to finish the old bottle is for the pharmacist.

The other question is whether the name change means a different drug. It does not: Ozempic tablets and the Ozempic injection share a molecule, and Ozempic tablets and the Wegovy pill share a tablet.

Questions people ask

Is Ozempic tablets a stronger drug than Rybelsus?

No. It is the same oral semaglutide in a newer formulation. The dose numbers are lower because the new tablet delivers the same exposure with less semaglutide, so 1.5 mg of Ozempic tablets corresponds to 3 mg of Rybelsus.

I still have Rybelsus at home. Can I keep taking it?

A bottle of Rybelsus is the same molecule at the old numbers. The label allows a switch between the two tablets after the first 30 days, starting the new tablet the day after the last old one, 7 mg to 4 mg and 14 mg to 9 mg. Whether to finish the bottle first is for your prescriber or pharmacist.

Are the morning rules the same?

Yes. Empty stomach, a sip of water, then at least 30 minutes before food, drink or other oral medications. The rule is written the same way on the Rybelsus label and on the Wegovy tablets label, which share the formulation.

Is Ozempic tablets the same as the Wegovy pill?

Same molecule, same maker, same morning rules, different indication and different strengths. Ozempic tablets are approved for type 2 diabetes at 1.5, 4 and 9 mg. The Wegovy pill is approved for weight management at 1.5, 4, 9 and 25 mg.
