Thirsty during the 30 minutes after the Wegovy pill?

The label's answer is to wait. The sip that goes with the tablet, up to 4 ounces, is the only water it allows before the 30 minutes are over, and it lists beverages among the things that wait. After the timer, drink as much as you like. Thirst on waking is real, and the label's rule is short.

The short answer

The label's answer is to wait. The sip that goes with the tablet, up to 4 ounces, is the only water it allows before the 30 minutes are over, and it lists beverages among the things that wait. After the timer, drink as much as you like. Thirst on waking is real, and the label's rule is short.

What the label says

From the label

Take WEGOVY tablets orally once-daily on an empty stomach in the morning with water (up to 4 ounces). After taking WEGOVY tablet wait at least 30 minutes before eating food, drinking beverages or taking other oral medications.

The label allows one measure of water, with the tablet, and then puts beverages behind the 30 minutes. It does not carve water out of the word beverages. Read plainly, the sip is the morning's water until the timer ends.

Why the label is strict about something so small

The manufacturer measured the tablet with 50, 120 and 240 mL of water. Up to 120 mL, nothing changed. At 240 mL, absorption fell by about 40 percent. The tablet is dissolving in the stomach during the half hour, and more liquid in there dilutes what it is doing. A glass of water at minute ten is, as far as the tablet is concerned, a bigger glass with the tablet.

What people actually do

Morning thirst is one of the small daily complaints on the forums, and it has a twist: several people describe their thirst cues fading on the pill, so that they forget to drink all day and wake up parched. The two habits that come up are a full glass the night before, well before bed, and a large glass waiting at the end of the timer.

The morning after a stomach bug is different, and the Medication Guide's own warning applies: nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can dehydrate, and dehydration can hurt the kidneys. On that morning, fluids first and the prescriber on the phone.

Oolite's timer ends with a tap on the watch, and the glass is the first thing after it.

Questions people ask

Water is not a beverage, surely?

The label says wait at least 30 minutes before drinking beverages, and the only water it describes before that is the sip with the tablet, up to 4 ounces. It does not make an exception for water after the tablet, so the safe reading is that water waits too.

Why would water matter after the tablet is swallowed?

The manufacturer tested the volume of water taken with the tablet and found that a full glass cut absorption by about 40 percent. The tablet is dissolving in the stomach during the 30 minutes, and the label wants it alone.

Can I drink water before the tablet, when I wake up?

The label speaks of an empty stomach and of the water taken with the tablet. It does not describe a glass drunk beforehand. Many people take their one sip as the tablet goes down and nothing before; if you drink a lot at night or on waking, mention it to your prescriber.

What if I am really dehydrated, after a hot night or a stomach bug?

The Medication Guide says dehydration can lead to kidney problems and asks you to drink fluids when nausea, vomiting or diarrhea are present. On such a morning, water first and the tablet's rules second is a reasonable reading, and a call to the prescriber is the right one.
